Write-up on 2010 CMO Summit

Nathan Gannon, CMO Council

After a day of engaging speakers and lively panelist discussion, participants at the 2010 CMO Council North America Summit walked away with a mandate to better engage colleagues in the C-Suite and new insight on earning marketing’s place alongside other executive leadership. On Thursday, December 9, marketing and business leaders from across the country descended on San Jose, Calif., for the one day conference, titled “Synchronizing the C-Suite.”

The event was highlighted by its three keynote speakers. Perry Kamel, Founding Managing Director at Accenture Interactive, kicked off the event with a stellar opening address. Focusing on how to align with the CIO to maximize the full potential of online marketing campaigns, Kamel set the tone for a high level of discussion and exploration that continued in all of the speakers and panels to follow.

Stephen Jones, presently the managing partner of Brand Ignition Group and formerly CMO of Coca-Cola Co. and CEO of Jones Soda Co., delivered the second keynote address, discussing the unique relationship between CMO and CEO. With experience in both roles, Jones stressed developing a relationship while always maintaining the CEO’s professional respect. “I want the CEO to believe he's a great marketer. I want him to believe I'm a better marketer,” he said.

The final keynote address was given by Chris Hummel, CMO and president North America of Siemens Enterprise Communications. He focused on how CMO’s must demonstrate their worth to CEO’s and become valued assets within the C-Suite.

With headline sponsorship from Accenture and Jigsaw, the event also included five panel discussions on topics across Customer Experience, Marketing Effectiveness and Operational Efficiency. Participants and attendees at the elite retreat included marketing and business leaders from Accenture, Chrysler, Prudential, Juniper Networks, Taleo, Denny's, Motorola, Wells Fargo, Papa Murphy's, Siemens Business Communications, Farmers Insurance, SAP, Egon Zehnder, SunPower, Merkle, Cisco, AIG Bank, Franke, Xerox, Subway, Ricoh InfoPrint Solutions, Gaylord Entertainment, OpenText, 24-Hour Fitness, and Wrigley's, among many others.
